The Faculty for German Language and Literature performs research in a number of different eras and topic areas. An epoch-specific focus of our work includes Goethe's time and the Romantic Era; in our work on criminal literature, rhetoric and poetry or the history of jesters, for instance, we also go back to the Middle Ages or further ahead into the 21st century. In addition to traditional philological topics of interest, we are also particularly interested in topics of an interdisciplinary nature regarding the humanities and social sciences, such as cultural codes like eating or clothing, the whole field of body concepts, theories on space or the history of European literary culture from the Bible to the present.
